Camden Town grow out of the development of the Regent's Canal in the early
part of the nineteenth century, however, the development of the railways
and subsequent decline of the importance of the canals
led to a stagnation of Camden's fortunes. In the mid 1970s it was decided
to convert Camden Lock's wharves and warehouses on the Regent's Canal into craft markets.
This led to a major influx of creative talent and the creation of one of London's most popular tourist attractions which is now visited by over 10 million people each year.
Camden now has six main markets, they are:
- Stables Market,
- Camden Lock Market,
- Canal Market,
- Camden Market,
- Inverness Street Market,
- Electric Market.
They each have their own individual characteristics and, together
with the wide selection of shops, contribute to the unique Camden
atmosphere which has become a centre for many art and cultural
activities.
Today Camden has become a cultural and economic magnet that attracts
a wide and varied group of people from all over London and the
World. It is a popular attraction for large numbers of tourists
and now supports a growing community of shops, artists and small
businesses.
In addition, there are a number of outstanding open spaces in
the Camden area, including two Royal Parks:
- Regent's Park, designed in
1811 by John Nash, and
- Primrose Hill, opened to the public in 1842.
Visiting Camden is an enjoyable experience and we hope that you will drop into Jamon Jamon to enjoy some of our delicious Tapas and a glass of fine wine.
